The day we had with Declan Brown was truly unbelievable. It was such a fun and exciting day and really was an eye opener for people who are struggling with certain aspects of their lives. The team building day was a real game changer not just for me personally but for the whole of 6th year. Declan had a real gift where he could see and feel people’s problems in life just by looking at them. Declan really helped to take people’s minds off things happening in their lives while encouraging them to experience joy and laughter.

When we arrived on the day we were introduced to one of Irelands nicest and funniest couples, Declan and his wife Annmarie. Firstly, Declan gave us a small brief summary of his life including his work and his home life. This was delivered in an extremely light-hearted and funny way and as a group we tried our best to reframe from bursting into laughter. Straight away the bar was set and we knew this was going to be a day of many emotions.

The day itself was split into three sections:

Section 1: Declan spoke about his life and family. He presented activities which boosted our energy and helped us to engage with the various tasks. Groups were divided up using various methods which include everything from age to shoes size to male/female etc. so many people were taken out of their comfort zones and mixed with people they may not have hung around with before. Most of the games and activities were elimination based so competition and teamwork were strong.

Section 2: This was quite an emotional element of the day but resulted in an extreme confidence boost for many. A sheet was passed around to every single student in the group and each person had to write something positive about that person. This was completed by 77 students. When people received their sheets back, some were shocked and pleasantly surprised at the good things that people had said about them. Everything was anonymous but it was still really nice and quite moving to see what positive comments people had to say about you.

Section 3: Declan explained his own struggles in life. This was extremely touching to see a man who has achieved so much share such personal information with us and emotional in the sense that many could relate to what he was saying. It showed us that no matter how hard life gets you can get help. We also participated in a really good meditation session where we were able to lie down and drift off into total relaxation.

Overall, Declan really opened my eyes to what my life can be. He helped me both personally and socially as he taught me how to help myself. I would love to meet him again as he has been such an inspiration to me and so many others. It was a pleasure to get to know Declan and Annmarie. This was a fantastic day and something that I will remember for a very long time. I am really happy that I went to this team building day and would highly recommend other students to go in the future.
