6LA sleep out for Homelessness

As part of the Leaving Cert Applied Social Education Task, thirteen LCA students and three teachers braved the elements and slept outside in the college grounds on Friday 18th October, to raise funds for Focus Ireland. This organisation is one of the leading light in fighting the cause to reduce and prevent homelessness.

The gods were looking down on us and the night was dry and not too cold. The students were full of energy unlike their poor teachers who were longing for a few hours of shut-eye. Eventually, around 3.00am, their energy weaned and one by one, they fell asleep. Our beds for the night were cardboard boxes and sleeping bags, no 5 star accommodation here.

Mr Sharkey called in for a chat and told a few ghost stories; do not know whether the staff or students were most scared. Jacinta and Peggy also called in with a welcome cup of tea to see if we were still alive.

Morning came quickly and we were aroused by the welcome aroma of breakfast cooking, courtesy of Majella and Marie in the canteen. Thank you ladies, I do not think I ever tasted a breakfast so good.

The students have sponsorship cards raising money for Focus Ireland; all donations are still being accepted for this worthy cause.

A word of thanks to the college management for allowing this event to take place and three cheers for the teachers Mr. Conor Dempsey, Ms. Majella Stafford and Ms. Aileen Walsh who offered their services on the night.
