The members of the Orchestra are students who receive instrumental tuition in the college from professional instrumental tutors Olwen Sheil (Cello and Double Bass), Emer Collins (Violin and Viola), Ann Wickham and Philippa Callery (Woodwind). These are classes provided by WWETB and were designed by Wexford Arts Council to increase numbers of orchestral players in the county. Students are encouraged to achieve their full musical potential and may undertake instrumental exams with R.I.A.M. or A.B.R.S.M. These classes also assist with Junior and Leaving Cert Music. Playing an instrument can have many benefits and our scheme gives that opportunity to our students.
In Enniscorthy Vocational College, instruments may be rented from the college and a nominal fee is paid each term. Students attend weekly lessons during the school day with the instrumental tutor. The college may rotate lesson times in order that students do not miss the same subject every week. Orchestra Rehearsal takes place on Wednesdays at lunchtime in the Music Room. It is a requirement of the instrumental-scheme that students in receipt of instrumental lessons in Enniscorthy Vocational College who have reached a required standard, take part in the Orchestra. In some cases, students go on to participate in the Co. Wexford Youth Orchestra.
The school Orchestra had its first major public performance in 2011 at the first Wexford Festival of Youth Orchestras in the National Opera House with composer Vincent Kennedy. In March 2014, the Orchestra travelled to Prague, Czech Republic to take part in the 2014 International Festival of Youth Orchestras. The following year they performed with composer Brian Irvine in the third Co. Wexford Festival. In March 2017, the Orchestra and staff hosted a friendship concert with Co. Cork ETB Junior Youth Orchestra in the College and travelled to Coláiste Choilm, Ballincollig, Co. Cork for a very enjoyable return concert.
